A Long Lunch with Martin Flanagan

'45Downstairs' proved to be the perfect venue for this ‘back to basics’ event. The intent was to have an agenda that allowed members more time to chat and interact with each other, to celebrate the return of footy and to share predictions on the season that lies ahead. And what a roaring success it was…..

Martin Flanagan provided a hugely compelling keynote address. His talk centred around the most enjoyable game of footy he watched in 2014, at Moyston in Victoria’s West. He reviewed documented history of the Australian indigenous game in this region, and provided a strong argument as to why Moyston should be recognised as the birthplace of the modern game of AFL. It was hugely interesting stuff and had the capacity crowd captivated.

Earlier in the day, Elliot Goblet provided a hilarious warm-up and proved why he is one of Australia’s most enduring and successful comedians.

Julz Grover from the Mirabel Foundation described how the money raised at GSC events funds numerous programs and camps for the kids that his organisation supports. The money is used specifically to provide these young people with access to sport and recreation. Over $225,000 has been raised for Mirabel since the GSC was founded 8 years ago.

Boags beer and Coldstream cider was on offer wherever you turned – another huge thank you to our major sponsors.

Shane Pullen on guitar belted out music pre and post lunch, adding to the general celebratory atmosphere.

Most importantly, we raised over $7,500 – 100% of which will assist disadvantaged young people to access and participate in sport.

Thanks to all attendees for the contribution, and we hope to see you at the next lunch on October 9th.
